Dawson Creek Athletic Association
Past Projects

Over the years, the DCAA has played a key role in the development of sports facilities in Dawson Creek.

A single-sheet curling rink and an open-air skating rink were the first projects undertaken by the DCAA. The site of the rinks was that of the present Post Office building on the corner of 10th Street and l04th Avenue.

The following summer of 1932, a nine-hole golf course was laid out with the number one tee-off located where the Notre Dame School now stands.

Meanwhile, other sports facilities were being provided on the sports grounds consisting of a baseball diamond, basketball court, tennis courts, and stampede grounds and a racetrack. The stampede grounds were located in the area of the present curling rink and H.J. O'Brien School.

Work began on the first nine holes of the present golf course in the summer of 1947 and the course was opened for play in 1948.

At that time, another building known as the Chicken Dinner Dine and Dance was purchased and used as a golf clubhouse.

The DCAA donated the land and contributed $7,500 for the construction of the former outdoor swimming pool, which was located where the Library now stands.

As well as contributing funds for the initial construction, the DCAA spent in excess of $100,000 to rebuild the arena following the fire, which gutted the arena in December 1956.

The Dawson Creek Athletic Association sold $150,000 worth of debentures to raise money to build an eight-sheet curling rink, install a cement floor in the arena and to equip both facilities with artificial ice. The curling rink was completed in 1956.

In recent years, the DCAA has purchased additional land for the expansion of the golf course to 18 holes, and loaned the Dawson Creek Golf and Country Club a further $100,000.

The DCAA in 1980 advanced a loan of $50,000 to the Dawson Creek Ski and Recreation Club, as well as approving a loan of up to $130,000 to the. Dawson Creek Curling Club.
