As with all children raised in the north in the 50's, I attended a one-room school with my brothers and sisters and all my friends. The teacher coped with grades 1 to 8.
2 years of High School in Whitehorse and 2 years at University Hill High in Vancouver prepared me for University. In 1962 when I began teacher training, we could teach with 2 years of university. So that is what I did. Then followed summer sessions, night classes, and correspondence courses and completion of my Bachelor of Education degree-only 18 years after I entered university. Talk about a slow learner!
A 5th year was completed in 1994, again adding to my knowledge about education of special children (including education of native students), research into vision-related learning problems (functional vision), and computers.
As a resource person in the special education department I had the privilege to attend a wide range of conferences, workshops and on-the-job training in specialized areas and to meet people from varied backgrounds who shared their wealth of knowledge, information and experience. Examples: Focus Conferences re: Integration of Children with Special Needs; SOl training (Structure of Intellect).
