SYSTEM UTILIZATION REPORTS

Occasionally the Peace Region Internet System lines get overloaded with calls. It is sometimes difficult to evaluate whether we, as PRIS members, should spend the money to purchase extra lines, or whether we should change our utilization habits to make better use of the capacity we have.

These pages are designed to provide you with some background information on the line use patterns that the PRIS system experiences.

In order to reduce data transfer loads, the data is not transmitted pictorially. To view the graphs without distortion, you should set your Web Browser font to either of the following:
Size 11, Times New Roman Font
Size 9, Arial Font

The data is updated every five minutes, and in order to ensure that you are getting the latest information, you should 'refresh' or 'reload' your page when you refer to it.

In order to protect your privacy, your User ID is encrypted. You can quite easily determine your encrypted User ID by:
noting how long ago you logged on,
going to the System Utilization Data for your town,
seeing which encrypted User Id logged on that long ago,
taking a note of that encrypted User Id, because that was probably you.

You might wish to confirm your encrypted User Id by logging off, then logging back on, waiting about 5 minutes, and seeing if you have indeed chosen the correct User Id. Your encrypted User Id will not change.

Occasionally, If all ports are very busy, and you have been on for a significant length of time, you will be identified by name beside the port you are using. You should consider this to be an indication that it might be appropriate for you to log off for a while, and give other members a chance to log on. If ports continue to be busy, you may be logged off automatically until line use slackens off.

In the example above you can learn the following:
*The User on Line 1 has been on for a total of 3hr 20 min since this morning after 8:00 AM
*The user on Line 1 has been on 15 minutes with this session.
*Line 2 has been empty for 15 minutes.
*Line 3:If you just logged on about five minutes ago, your encrypted User Id is 'hheshvzi'. Write it down for future reference.
*The User on Line 4 has a 'Protected Time' of 3hr 35 min. Once she has been on that long she will get an 'X' in Column 8 (See Line 7).
*The User on Line 7 (dsfnoktn) has been on line 8hr 5min today and, as is indicated by the 'X' in Column 8, has exceeded his 'Protected Time'.
If all lines fill up, he will lose anonymity and may be logged off automatically.
Now, let's assume that two more people log on in the next 10 minutes.

At this time John Doe should consider logging off to give others a chance. This should be done out of fairness, or out of fear that others, who now know his e-mail address, may get annoyed at him. In any case, he is now vulnerable to a system-generated automatic log-off. He may log on again when system use declines, or in any case, the following day.

The Concept of 'Protected' Time
PRIS endevours to maintain a User:Line Ratio of between 8:1 and 10:1 at all times. However, there are periods when the demand on internet facilities is greater than these ratios can support. In addition, there have been many occasions when additional lines were not delivered when scheduled. Under either of these circumstances most members feel that they would rather have their usage limited, rather than face interminable busy signals. "Protected Time" assures that each member will get a fair share of internet time.

The amount of protected time each member gets is at least 3 hours per day. Members who have used their access less in the last 30 days get more protected time, up to 7 hours per day. The amount of protected time you get is:

3 hours

Each day, starting at 8:00 AM, the PRIS system calculates the hours you have logged, and you become susceptible to log-off after this time exceeds your protected time.
Note the following:
If you leave your line idle, your protected time will decrease. It is YOUR responsibility to ensure that you log off correctly. (Check for a dial tone on your phone, if in doubt.)
The time spent on-line in the wee hours will not affect your allottment for the day, since logging starts at 8:00 AM, but it does wind into your average monthly time, and therefore does affect your protected time for future days.
You will NOT be logged off unless all lines are full. Your access will be restored when there are at least two free lines. Most members will not ever perceive that their access is limited.
PRIS may sell memberships at a higher monthly rate to those who feel that they need more protected time

If you know your encrypted User ID, you can check your protected time in the following table:
