"I would like to let people know just how thankful I am that we have an EFAP program. This program had a very positive impact on me, my daughters and my husband as well. Things come into one’s life that can cause turmoil within oneself and family, that if they go untreated, can cause very negative patterns to arise. This is exactly what happened to me. Counselling was not something that I felt comfortable with or even thought that I would seek; but, I did." "Counselling was not something that I felt comfortable with..." "It is nice to know that within this community whether it be through doctors, employers, co-workers, there is an ability to find this kind of help -- the EFAP program has made itself very accessible." "When a doctor mentioned that the (TR Counselling Office) was somewhere where I could go to get help with the problems I was experiencing, I was scared. The word counselling even in this day and age still has a stigma or at least it did to me. I was brought up to think you had to be in a real bad way and/or crazy to have to go for counselling. But once I went to the office and had an appointment, I found it to be a very different experience. I was made to feel welcome and safe within the office by the counsellor and office staff. They made me feel "normal". I was able to deal with the problems at hand and some that I had been carrying with me for a very long time. I was able to deal with my problems within a confidential and comfortable atmosphere." "Counselling helped me to face things that I needed to deal with. Even now should a problem or crisis arise in my life, I would seek this kind of help again -- whether it be going to speak with the counsellor or just to use the great resource Library that the ARS has available for clients and the public in general." "I wasn't coping at home or at my job..." "Looking back now to the time I went for help, I see just how much my personal problems were effecting my whole world. I wasn't coping at home, at my job or within any extra curricular activities where I was being depended upon. I was lucky I was at a job where my boss was understanding. The stress I was trying to handle seemed to control my whole thought patterns. If not for the counselling at the ARS where I was taught personal stress management plus focusing on changing internal thought patterns, I could have easily have been let go from my job. Due to my problems effecting my work habits I could have been forced to take indefinite time off to get through this one personal problem. I even thought of quitting altogether just to try to lessen some of the pressure I was experiencing. My personal pattern to handing stress was always to change an external area within my life, such as quitting a job or moving, instead of looking at the actual problem and changing that. Counselling taught me ways to look at my problems from a different avenue and deal with them instead of juggling my life to be able to run from them." "Sometimes it takes awhile for the consequences of our actions to come back to us. When it comes to my children, I am now able to see how much my well being effects them. They now have a mother who is able to help them with their every day activities. "The ARS has helped me to learn tools for dealing with problems in a positive way..." They have a home life that is more focused and more of a family unit again. My experience with counselling at the ARS has helped me to learn tools for dealing with problems in a positive way – new patterns and tools I hope to pass on to my children to keep their world secure. I hope they'll grow up without the stigma associated with counselling that I had. We can be just a ordinary member of society and still need help to deal with the every day pressures or personal problems we encounter along the way." "...the EFAP program and the ARS should be encouraged and supported in every community." "Why is it that when we have physical problems we go to a doctor? And that is normal. You would be considered nuts if you didn't. But when we have a mental or personal problem we try to hide it from everyone and we think we can deal with it ourselves. After my personal experience, I feel we aren't anymore trained to fix some problems ourselves then we are able to diagnose physical ailments. That's why the EFAP program and the ARS should be encouraged and supported in every community."
